Early Ethereum Foundation ETH recipients move $11M to Kraken: what the data shows

Early Ethereum Foundation ETH recipients move $11M to Kraken: what the data shows

Two wallets that received Ether (ETH) from an early Ethereum Foundation distribution sent 4,393 ETH, worth about $11.1 million, to the Kraken exchange on Monday, according to on-chain tracker Lookonchain. The transfers prompted questions on social media about whether the Foundation is selling again. The wallet history on Arkham Intelligence supports a more cautious reading: the coins are two steps removed from the Foundation, and an exchange deposit is not the same as a sale.

What the wallet trail shows

Arkham data shows the Ethereum Foundation sent 59,751 ETH to an intermediary address about a decade ago, when ETH traded near $0.90. That address later split the coins into three parcels of roughly 18,000 ETH each and sent them to separate wallets, at a time when ETH was worth about $2.13.

One of those three wallets made the largest of Monday’s deposits, about 2,998 ETH, or around $7.6 million. Based on Lookonchain’s total, the second wallet accounts for roughly 1,395 ETH.

None of the downstream addresses is labelled as a Foundation wallet on Arkham. Equal parcels fit a pattern of ETH being distributed to separate recipients, but the data does not show who controls the wallets.

This is also not the first time the main wallet has used Kraken. Roughly five years ago it sent about 4,000 ETH to Kraken deposit addresses, in batches of 1,000 and 2,000 ETH.

Why the distinction matters

The Ethereum Foundation has sold ETH from its own treasury in the past, so trackers watch any address connected to it closely. A wallet that received Foundation ETH years ago is not necessarily controlled by the Foundation today, in the same way that a former employee selling shares is not the company selling.

An exchange deposit makes a sale possible and often comes before one. The blockchain, however, only records that the coins reached a Kraken deposit address. What happens to them inside the exchange is not publicly visible.

Scale matters too. About $11 million is small against ETH’s typical daily trading volume, so this flow is unlikely to drive the price on its own. The more relevant question is what happens to the coins still held. Based on the transfers visible on Arkham, the main wallet may still hold around 11,000 ETH from its original allocation, and the other two parcels from the same split could hold more.

What to watch next

Wallet labels: if Arkham or the Foundation ties these addresses to the Foundation itself, the story changes materially.

Remaining balances: further deposits from these wallets or their sister addresses would make a potential supply overhang a fairer question.

Official disclosure: a Foundation statement on treasury sales would be the clearest confirmation either way.

This article was written by Eamonn Sheridan at investinglive.com.
