Hype Alert! RedCoin named, but HSBC stablecoin is not yet live and no launch date is set

The announcement puts Hong Kong's largest bank into a licensed stablecoin market where Anchorpoint's HKDAP has been rolling out since August, so competition for Hong Kong dollar stablecoin share is now real. HSBC's distribution through existing banking apps is a structural advantage that standalone crypto issuers would find hard to match. There is no direct price signal, since RedCoin is pre-launch and not tradable. The undisclosed blockchain and wallet access rules are the main uncertainty for how far the token can travel outside HSBC's own ecosystem.

---

Unrelated, but 'red' sure is in the news:

What is red diesel and why is Trump weighing selling it to curb fuel prices?

---

The ype is overwhelming, but while HSBC has a name and a licence for its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, RedCoin is still a pre-launch product with no date, no blockchain and a licensed rival already live.

Summary:

HSBC announced on 30 September that its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin will be called HSBC RedCoin, with the "Red" referencing the bank's identity.

Launch is planned for the second half of 2026 through PayMe and the HSBC HK mobile banking app, with no exact date given.

RedCoin is pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar and backed by segregated, high-quality liquid assets.

It starts with P2P and merchant payments, then expands to corporate treasury, wholesale payments and tokenised asset settlement.

The HKMA granted HSBC and Anchorpoint the city's first stablecoin issuer licences on 10 April; Anchorpoint's HKDAP began a phased rollout in August.

HSBC has not disclosed the blockchain or how external wallets will interact with RedCoin.

HSBC has named its forthcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin, confirming that the token is due to launch in the second half of 2026 through PayMe and the HSBC Hong Kong mobile banking app. The bank announced the name on 30 September, with Maggie Ng, chief executive for Hong Kong, saying the branding reflects the lender's heritage and its long-standing red identity in the region.

RedCoin will be pegged one-to-one to the Hong Kong dollar and backed at all times by segregated, high-quality liquid assets. It will start with person-to-person transfers and payments to merchants, before HSBC extends it to corporate treasury, wholesale payments and the settlement of tokenised enterprise assets. One outlet put the potential retail reach at more than 3.3 million local consumers and tens of thousands of merchants, though that figure was not attributed to the bank. HSBC also cited a survey of 1,060 Hong Kong customers, in which 74% could name at least one stablecoin use case.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority granted HSBC and Anchorpoint the city's first stablecoin issuer licences on 10 April, according to crypto.news. Anchorpoint, a joint venture of Standard Chartered Hong Kong, HKT and Animoca Brands, began a phased rollout of its HKDAP stablecoin in August, so HSBC is entering a market where a licensed rival is already live. Crypto Times reported that the two are the only licensed issuers in Hong Kong.

Important details remain open. Crypto News Flash noted that HSBC has not identified the blockchain behind RedCoin, explained how external wallets will interact with it, or set an exact launch date. Those choices will determine whether the token functions mainly as a payment tool inside HSBC's own apps or becomes a more interoperable source of Hong Kong dollar liquidity. The bank is also keeping stablecoins separate from its institutional tokenised deposit network.

The product has not launched, and Crypto Times stressed that any token trading today under the name RedCoin or HSBC is not the bank's. The regulator has warned against fraudulent tokens. The next signals to watch are the launch date, the chosen blockchain and the wallet access rules, which will show how far HSBC intends RedCoin to travel beyond its own customer base.

---

Sidebar: Three kinds of Hong Kong dollar money

A licensed bank stablecoin (what RedCoin will be). A token issued by a bank under a Hong Kong Monetary Authority licence. RedCoin is designed to be pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar, backed by segregated, high-quality liquid assets, and redeemable at par. A bank issuing under a government licence is not the same as the government issuing the token. It is also denominated in Hong Kong dollars, unlike the US dollar stablecoins that dominate crypto trading.

A tokenised deposit. An ordinary bank deposit represented on a blockchain. HSBC already runs a network for these in wholesale finance and is keeping them separate from RedCoin, so the two products serve different purposes.

A look-alike token. RedCoin has not launched. Anything trading today as "RedCoin" or "HSBC" is not HSBC's, and the HKMA has warned against fraudulent tokens. At launch, the real token will be available only through PayMe and the HSBC HK app.

What to watch next

The next observable step is the launch date, which HSBC has not given beyond the second half of 2026. The blockchain choice and the wallet rules matter more for what RedCoin becomes: if outside wallets can hold it, it could grow into wider Hong Kong dollar liquidity, and if not, it stays a payment tool inside HSBC's apps. Anchorpoint's HKDAP rollout, already under way since August, is the live comparison for how quickly customers adopt a licensed token. Until HSBC publishes those details, RedCoin is a named and licensed plan, not a product, and readers shouldn't treat the announcement as evidence of demand.

This article was written by Eamonn Sheridan at investinglive.com.
